Mild Velocity Dispersion Evolution of Spheroid-like Massive Galaxies since Z ∼ 2

چکیده
Making use of public spectra from Cimatti et al. (2008), we measure for the first time the velocity dispersion of spheroid-like massive (M ⋆ ∼ 10 11 M ⊙) galaxies at z ∼ 1.6. By comparing with galaxies of similar stellar mass at lower redshifts, we find evidence for a mild evolution in velocity dispersion, decreasing from ∼ 240 km s −1 at z ∼ 1.6 down to ∼ 180 km s −1 at z ∼ 0. Such mild evolution contrasts with the strong change in size (a factor of ∼ 4) found for these type of objects in the same cosmic time, and it is consistent with a progressive larger role, at lower redshift, of the dark matter halo in setting the velocity dispersion of these galaxies. We discuss the implications of our results within the context of different scenarios proposed for the evolution of these massive objects.

متن کاملSize Evolution of the Most Massive Galaxies at 1.7 < Z < 3 from Goods Nicmos Survey Imaging
We measure the sizes of 82 massive (M ≥ 10M⊙) galaxies at 1.7 ≤ z ≤ 3 utilizing deep HST NICMOS data taken in the GOODS North and South fields. Our sample is almost an order of magnitude larger than previous studies at these redshifts, providing the first statistical study of massive galaxy sizes at z > 2, confirming the extreme compactness of these galaxies. We split our sample into disk-like ...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Mbh-σ Relation Inferred from the Age Distribution of Local Early-type Galaxies and Agn Evolution
We utilize the local velocity dispersion function (VDF) of spheroids, together with their inferred age– distributions, to predict the VDF at higher redshifts (0 < z ∼< 6), under the assumption that (i) most of the stars in each nearby spheroid formed in a single episode, and (ii) the velocity dispersion σ remained nearly constant afterward. We assume further that a supermassive black hole (BH) ...
متن کاملStar Formation-Regulated Growth of Black Holes in Protogalactic Spheroids
The observed relation between central black hole mass and spheroid velocity dispersion is interpreted in terms of a self-regulation model that incorporates a viscous Keplerian accretion disk to feed the black hole, embedded in a massive, self-gravitating star forming disk that eventually populates the spheroid. The model leads to a constant ratio between black hole mass and spheroid mass which ...
متن کاملExtremely Compact Massive Galaxies at 1.7 < Z < 3
We measure and analyse the sizes of 82 massive (M ≥ 10M⊙) galaxies at 1.7 ≤ z ≤ 3 utilizing deep HST NICMOS data taken in the GOODS North and South fields. Our sample provides the first statistical study of massive galaxy sizes at z > 2. We split our sample into disk–like (Sérsic index n ≤ 2) and spheroid– like (Sérsic index n > 2) galaxies, and find that at a given stellar mass, disk–like gala...
